CO.ACT DETROIT RECEIVES UNRESTRICTED FUNDING FROM MCGREGOR FUND
DETROIT, MI, August 22, 2022 — Co.act Detroit announces a $300,000, multi-year grant from McGregor Fund. The unrestricted award will be deployed over three years to support Co.act’s operational budget.
The grant award is part of McGregor’s Foundation Directed strategy. These awards, for which applications are not solicited, direct grant support to strengthen the nonprofit sector, address discrete citywide and regional opportunities and challenges, and honor the legacy of their founders.
Co.act Detroit, launched in June 2019 with initial funding from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, has gained local renown for its work in advancing a more equitable funding landscape and in bolstering the strength and connectivity of the nonprofit ecosystem of southeast Michigan. This work includes an approach to re-granting that applies racial equity frameworks and community-centered decision-making to deploy resources, workshops and funding to nonprofits, the majority of which are BIPOC-led.
“Co.act uses its resources and position to push for change in the nonprofit sector, and is proud to work with funders who do the same,” said Allandra Bulger, executive director of Co.act Detroit. “This multi-year grant will support our work in creative and collaborative approaches to achieving sustained and equitable change.”
Core to Co.act’s approach to regranting is a belief in collaboration and shared decision making. Recent examples of this approach in action include the administration of the KIP:D+ grant program (in partnership with The Kresge Foundation and Michigan Community Resources) and the Detroit Community Development Mini-grant Fund (in partnership with McGregor, the Hudson-Webber Foundation and Community Development Advocates of Detroit).
McGregor Fund historically has supported social service efforts. Under a commitment to anti-racism, McGregor has expanded its portfolio to include grants that develop leadership and strengthen nonprofits and collaboratives in an equity-centered way. This $300,000 operational grant will support Co.act’s strategic framework goals to develop diverse partnerships, grow leadership capacity, and build organizational sustainability.
“We believe in Co.act’s strategic, equity-focused work — it is both exciting and essential for the future of our local nonprofit ecosystem,” said Kate Levin Markel, president of McGregor Fund. “Traditionally, foundations have not paid much if any attention to equity and have under-invested in BIPOC-led organizations. Co.act offers us an equity-focused means to invest in nonprofit capacity building, regranting to smaller nonprofits, leadership development, and more, and we’re proud to be among their supporters.”
